Menachem Mendel Taub
Also known as The Kaliver Rebbe
1923 CE–2019 CE · Modern · Marghita
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Taub (1923-2019), widely known as the Kaliver Rebbe, was born in Marghita, in the Transylvania region of Romania, and stood seventh in the paternal line descending from Rabbi Yitzchak Izak of Kaliv, founder of the Hasidic dynasty that bears that town's name. Deported to Auschwitz in 1944, he was subjected to Josef Mengele's medical experiments and later held in further camps, among them Bergen-Belsen, before liberation. He recovered in Sweden, immigrated to the United States in 1947, and settled in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1962 he moved to Israel, founding Kiryas Kaliv in Rishon LeZion the following year and later relocating his community to Jerusalem. Much of his later activity centered on Holocaust remembrance, notably his call to recite the Shema in memory of those who perished. His writings include Kol Menachem and Shema Yisrael.
