Georgy Malenkov

Georgy Malenkov (1902–1988) was a Soviet politician who had risen to high rank under Stalin and briefly emerged as the country's leading figure after Stalin's death in 1953, serving as Premier (Chairman of the Council of Ministers). He advocated some easing of tensions and a shift toward producing more consumer goods. Within the collective leadership he was gradually outmaneuvered by Nikita Khrushchev and was forced to give up the premiership in 1955. He was later expelled from the party leadership in 1957 after a failed move against Khrushchev.
