Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela (1918–2013) was a South African anti-apartheid leader who became the country's first democratically elected president. A leader of the African National Congress, he was convicted of sabotage and imprisoned for twenty-seven years before his release in 1990. He then helped negotiate the end of apartheid and the transition to multiracial democracy, sharing the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize. He served as president from 1994 to 1999, emphasizing national reconciliation, and remained a globally recognized figure until his death in 2013.
