Gabriel García Márquez

Gabriel García Márquez was a Colombian novelist, short-story writer, and journalist. Born in 1927 in the Caribbean town of Aracataca and largely raised by his grandparents, he studied law in Bogotá before turning to journalism along Colombia's coast and abroad. His 1967 novel Cien años de soledad (One Hundred Years of Solitude) became a central work of the literary current known as magical realism; other books include El coronel no tiene quien le escriba, El otoño del patriarca, Crónica de una muerte anunciada, and El amor en los tiempos del cólera. He worked as a foreign correspondent in Europe and later settled in Mexico City. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982 and died in 2014.
