Yuri Andropov

Yuri Andropov (1914–1984) became General Secretary of the Communist Party in 1982 after leading the KGB, the Soviet security and intelligence service, for many years. As leader he sought to combat corruption and enforce labor discipline in an attempt to reinvigorate the stagnating Soviet economy. His brief tenure coincided with heightened Cold War tensions with the United States. Already in poor health when he took office, he led the country for only about fifteen months before his death in 1984.
