Henry VIII

Henry VIII ruled England from 1509 to 1547. When the pope refused to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, he broke with Rome and had Parliament recognize him as Supreme Head of the Church of England, launching the English Reformation. He dissolved the monasteries, transferring their vast lands and wealth to the crown. Famous for his six marriages, his reign strengthened royal and parliamentary power and permanently altered England's religious landscape.
