Frederick I Barbarossa

Frederick I 'Barbarossa' of the Hohenstaufen dynasty was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1155 and reigned until 1190. He fought long campaigns to assert imperial authority over the wealthy city-states of northern Italy, suffering a major defeat at Legnano in 1176, and clashed repeatedly with the papacy. He strengthened imperial administration in Germany and raised the prestige of the crown. He drowned in 1190 in Asia Minor while leading his army on the Third Crusade.
