Minamoto no Yoritomo
1147 CE–1199 CE · Kamakura
Minamoto no Yoritomo led his clan to victory over the rival Taira in the Genpei War of 1180-1185. Rather than rule from the imperial court, he built a warrior government (bakufu) at Kamakura, and in 1192 received the title of shogun. His Kamakura shogunate was the first of Japan's warrior regimes, establishing a form of military government that, in various dynasties, would dominate Japan for roughly seven centuries.
