Pope Celestine II
?–1144 CE · Città di Castello
Guido di Castello, a learned Italian cleric from Città di Castello who had studied with Peter Abelard, became Celestine II in 1143. A cardinal experienced in papal diplomacy, he was respected for his learning and moderation. His pontificate lasted barely five months before his death in 1144, too short to leave a substantial mark, though he is noted for lifting the interdict his predecessor had placed on France over a dispute with King Louis VII. His brief tenure opened a period of instability in Rome, as the commune movement and renewed urban unrest soon challenged papal temporal authority in the city.
