Gwanggaeto the Great
374 CE–412 CE · Gungnae (Goguryeo)
Gwanggaeto the Great was the nineteenth monarch of Goguryeo, reigning from 391 to 412. Through vigorous campaigns he expanded the kingdom to its greatest extent, pressing Baekje in the south, aiding Silla against Wa and Gaya forces, and extending Goguryeo power over parts of Manchuria and the northern peninsula. His conquests and reign are commemorated on the towering Gwanggaeto Stele, erected by his son Jangsu around 414, one of the most important epigraphic records of early Korea.
