Yazdegerd I

Yazdegerd I was king of the Sasanian Empire of Persia from 399 to 420. He is best remembered for his tolerant policy toward the empire's religious minorities, maintaining friendly relations with the Jews and permitting the Christian Church of the East to organize itself formally at a council in 410. This conciliatory stance, together with his efforts to curb the power of the nobility and the Zoroastrian priesthood, earned him the hostile epithet "the Sinner" in later Persian tradition, even as Jewish and Christian sources remembered him favorably. He kept a long peace with the Roman Empire before his death in 420.
