Jovian
c. 331 CE–c. 364 CE · Belgrade
Jovian (c. 331-364 CE), born at Singidunum (modern Belgrade), was proclaimed emperor by the army after Julian was killed during the retreat from the Persian campaign in late June 363. To extract the trapped army he concluded a costly peace with the Sasanian Empire, ceding territory east of the Tigris including the fortress city of Nisibis. A Christian, he reversed Julian's pagan-revivalist program — restoring Christian privileges and the Chi-Rho (labarum) army standard and revoking Julian's anti-Christian edicts — though his reign lasted only about eight months before his death in February 364.
