Valens
c. 328 CE–c. 378 CE · Vinkovci
Valens was the Valentinianic emperor of the East (r. 364–378), installed as co-emperor by his elder brother Valentinian I. A homoian ("Arian") Christian, he supported the non-Nicene party and pressed against pro-Nicene bishops in the East; he is recorded as having moved to exile Basil of Caesarea, one of the Cappadocian Fathers, though the threat was not carried through. He was killed with much of his army at the catastrophic Battle of Adrianople against the Goths on 9 August 378. Soon after, the Nicene party regained ascendancy in the East under Theodosius I, who established Nicene Christianity as the imperial faith (Edict of Thessalonica, 380).
