Theodosius I
c. 347 CE–c. 395 CE · Coca
Theodosius I (347–395 CE), born at Cauca (modern Coca) in Roman Spain, was the last emperor to rule a united Roman Empire. With the Edict of Thessalonica (380) and the Council of Constantinople (381) he established Nicene Christianity as the state religion and defined Arianism as heresy. After his troops massacred thousands of civilians at Thessalonica in 390, Ambrose, bishop of Milan, barred him from communion until he performed public penance, a documented confrontation between imperial and ecclesiastical authority.
