Julius Nepos
c. 430 CE–c. 480 CE · modern Croatia
Julius Nepos (c. 430–480 CE) was a Western Roman emperor who reigned in Italy from 474 to 475 before being driven out by his general Orestes, who installed his own son Romulus Augustulus on the throne. A native of Dalmatia (in modern Croatia), Nepos withdrew to that province and continued to claim the imperial title there, with the recognition of the Eastern court at Constantinople, until he was murdered in 480. He is often regarded by modern historians as the last legitimate Western emperor.
