Glycerius
c. 420 CE–c. 480 CE · modern Croatia
Glycerius was Western Roman emperor in 473–474, proclaimed at Ravenna by Gundobad, the Burgundian magister militum and power behind the throne. His birth year and origin are not securely recorded, though he is generally placed in the early fifth century and associated with Dalmatia (modern Croatia). Unrecognized by the Eastern emperor Leo I, he was deposed in 474 by Julius Nepos and made bishop of Salona, near modern Split. According to the historian Malchus, he was later implicated in the 480 assassination of the exiled Nepos; the date and circumstances of his own death are uncertain.
