Libius Severus

Libius Severus

c. 420 CEc. 465 CE · Lucania (Potenza)

Libius Severus (Severus III) was a native of Lucania who reigned as Western Roman emperor from 461 to 465 CE. He was installed and controlled as a figurehead by the magister militum Ricimer, the real power in the West, and was never recognized by the Eastern emperor Leo I. He died in 465; ancient sources differ on whether his death was natural or, as Cassiodorus claimed, a poisoning by Ricimer.
