Rajendra Chola I
971 CE–1044 CE · Gangaikonda Cholapuram
Rajendra Chola I (reigned 1014-1044), son of Rajaraja Chola I, expanded the Chola Empire to its greatest extent. He led an overland expedition to the Ganges in northern India, taking the title Gangaikonda Chola, and around 1025 launched a remarkable naval campaign across the Bay of Bengal against the Srivijaya kingdom in Southeast Asia. To commemorate his northern victory he founded a new capital, Gangaikonda Cholapuram, and under him Chola maritime and commercial power reached across the Indian Ocean.
