Rajaraja Chola I
947 CE–1014 CE · Thanjavur
Rajaraja Chola I (reigned 985-1014) presided over the rise of the Chola Empire to a dominant power in South India and the Indian Ocean. From his capital at Thanjavur he extended Chola rule across the far south, including parts of Sri Lanka and Kerala, and reorganized the empire's revenue and administration. He is best remembered for building the great Brihadisvara (Rajarajeshvara) temple at Thanjavur, completed around 1010 and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for the naval reach that carried Chola influence overseas.
