Sabuktigin

?997 CE · Ghazni

Sabuktigin was the founder of the Ghaznavid dynasty, rising from Turkic slave-soldier origins in the service of the Samanids to become amir of Ghazna in 977. He expanded his territory in present-day Afghanistan and clashed with the Hindu Shahi rulers along the Indian frontier. He was the father of Mahmud of Ghazni, under whom the dynasty reached its greatest power. He died in 997.
