Lyndon B. Johnson was the 36th President, serving from 1963 to 1969 as a Democrat. He succeeded to the office after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, having been Vice President. He signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965 and launched Great Society programs, while U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War expanded.
