Kwame Nkrumah

Kwame Nkrumah (1909–1972) led the Gold Coast to independence as Ghana in 1957, becoming the first prime minister and, from 1960, the first president of the new state. A leading advocate of Pan-Africanism, he promoted African unity and state-led industrial development. His government pursued major infrastructure projects but grew increasingly centralized and one-party in character. He was deposed in a military coup in 1966 while abroad and died in exile in 1972.
