Al-Mutawakkil (822–861) was the tenth Abbasid caliph, ruling from 847 to 861. He reversed the religious policy of his predecessors by ending the Mihna and favoring traditionist scholarship over the doctrines it had enforced. He was assassinated by members of his Turkish guard in 861, an event that opened a decade of instability at Samarra often called the Anarchy at Samarra.
