Jayavarman II

Jayavarman II (c. 770–835) was the founder of the Khmer Empire and is traditionally credited with launching Cambodia's Angkorian age. Later inscriptions record that around 802 CE he performed a mountaintop ritual proclaiming himself chakravartin, or universal monarch, freeing the Khmer lands from Javanese overlordship and uniting rival principalities. He is associated with establishing the devaraja (god-king) cult, laying the political and religious foundations on which his successors built Angkor over the following centuries.
