al-Ma'mun

Al-Ma'mun (786–833) was the seventh Abbasid caliph, ruling from 813 to 833 after defeating his brother al-Amin in civil war. He was a major patron of scholarship, supporting the translation of Greek scientific and philosophical works and the intellectual activity associated with Baghdad's House of Wisdom. He also instituted the Mihna, a state examination of religious scholars over the doctrine of the created Qur'an, and died in 833 while on campaign against the Byzantines.
