al-Wathiq

812 CE847 CE · Samarra

Al-Wathiq (812–847) was the ninth Abbasid caliph, ruling from 842 to 847 from the new capital at Samarra. He continued the religious policy of the Mihna begun under al-Ma'mun and relied heavily on the Turkish military commanders who had become central to the state. He died in 847 and was succeeded by his brother al-Mutawakkil.
