Abd al-Rahman II

Abd al-Rahman II (792-852) was the fourth Umayyad Emir of Cordoba, ruling al-Andalus from 822 to 852. His reign saw administrative reorganization along eastern models and extensive building and cultural patronage in Cordoba. He also contended with Viking raids on the Andalusian coast and with the movement of Christians in Cordoba who publicly sought martyrdom. He was succeeded by his son Muhammad I.
