al-Mu'tasim

Al-Mu'tasim (c. 796–842) was the eighth Abbasid caliph, ruling from 833 to 842. He built up a standing army drawn largely from Turkish slave soldiers, and in 836 founded a new capital at Samarra to house these troops away from Baghdad. His reign included a major military victory over the Byzantines at Amorium in 838; he died in 842.
