Anawrahta
1014 CE–1077 CE · Bagan
Anawrahta (1014–1077) founded the Pagan (Bagan) Empire, Burma's first unified state, after taking the throne in 1044. He brought the whole Irrawaddy valley under one rule for the first time, most notably by conquering the Mon kingdom of Thaton in 1057, and placed outlying regions such as the Shan states under Pagan's suzerainty. Converted by the monk Shin Arahan, he made Theravada Buddhism the empire's dominant faith and adorned his capital with pagodas, including the Shwezigon, shaping Burmese religious culture for centuries.
