Pope St. Gregory VII
1015 CE–1085 CE · Sovana, Tuscany
Hildebrand of Sovana, the driving force behind decades of reform under earlier popes, became Gregory VII in 1073 and gave his name to an entire movement. He asserted the supremacy of papal authority, condemned lay investiture of bishops, and clashed dramatically with Emperor Henry IV. The conflict produced the famous 1077 scene at Canossa, where the excommunicated emperor sought absolution. Their struggle later turned against Gregory: Henry installed an antipope and seized Rome, and Gregory died in exile at Salerno in 1085. Revered as a saint and reformer by Catholics, he remains a contested symbol of medieval church-state confrontation.
