al-Mustansir Billah

Al-Mustansir Billah (1029-1094) was the eighth Fatimid caliph, whose reign of nearly fifty-eight years (1036-1094) was the longest of the dynasty. The early part of his rule saw the Fatimid state at its greatest extent, but it was followed by prolonged fiscal crisis, famine, and the loss of much territory as military commanders and viziers came to dominate the government. His death in 1094 triggered a disputed succession that split the Isma'ili community into Nizari and Musta'li branches. The dynasty entered a long decline thereafter.
