Lord Eight Deer 'Jaguar Claw'

Lord Eight Deer 'Jaguar Claw' was an 11th-century Mixtec warrior-king who rose from the coastal kingdom of Tututepec to seize the prestigious throne of Tilantongo, briefly uniting much of the Mixteca region of Oaxaca. The codices credit him with dozens of conquests and record a turquoise nose-piercing ceremony that sealed a key alliance in 1097. Captured and sacrificed by a rival kinsman in 1115, he is the single most fully documented individual of pre-Conquest Mesoamerica, his life told across several surviving Mixtec manuscripts.
