Pope Victor II
1018 CE–1057 CE · Swabia
Gebhard of Dollnstein-Hirschberg, a Swabian noble and bishop of Eichstätt, was a trusted counselor of Emperor Henry III before becoming Victor II. The last of the German reform popes chosen by Henry, he uniquely combined papal and imperial influence, serving as the dying emperor's confidant and a regent-like guardian for the young Henry IV. He continued Leo IX's campaigns against simony and clerical concubinage through reforming synods. His death in 1057, after barely two years, removed a stabilizing figure linking empire and papacy on the eve of the investiture struggles that would soon set the two powers against each other.
