Bernardo O'Higgins

Bernardo O'Higgins (1778–1842) was a Chilean independence leader who commanded patriot forces during the struggle to end Spanish rule in Chile. After the decisive victories at Chacabuco and Maipú, he became the first head of state of an independent Chile, serving as Supreme Director from 1817 to 1823. His government introduced administrative and social reforms, but opposition led to his resignation in 1823. He went into exile in Peru, where he died in 1842, and is regarded as a founding figure of the Chilean nation.
