Klemens von Metternich

Klemens von Metternich was an Austrian statesman and diplomat who served as foreign minister from 1809 and as State Chancellor from 1821 until 1848. He was the leading architect of the settlement reached at the Congress of Vienna in 1814-1815, which reorganized Europe after the Napoleonic Wars. For more than three decades he was the dominant figure of a conservative order that sought to suppress revolutionary and nationalist movements across Europe. The revolutions of 1848 forced his resignation and flight, and he died in 1859.
