Stendhal
1783 CE–1842 CE · Novelist · Grenoble
Stendhal was the pen name of Marie-Henri Beyle, a French novelist born in Grenoble in 1783. He served in Napoleon's administration and armies, taking part in campaigns in Italy and the 1812 Russian expedition. After Napoleon's fall he settled in Milan, then returned to Paris, and from 1831 held a French consular post at Civitavecchia in the Papal States. His novels Le Rouge et le Noir (1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme (1839), with their close analysis of ambition, love, and psychology, are counted among the founding works of literary realism. He adopted more than a hundred pseudonyms. He died in Paris in 1842.
