William Wordsworth
1770 CE–1850 CE · Poet · Cockermouth
William Wordsworth was an English poet whose work helped inaugurate the Romantic movement in English literature. With Samuel Taylor Coleridge he published Lyrical Ballads (1798), which favored ordinary language and rural subjects, and its 1800 preface argued that poetry is "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings." Much of his life was spent in the Lake District, where he wrote lyrics such as "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" and the long autobiographical poem The Prelude, published posthumously. He also composed odes, sonnets, and the epic-scaled Excursion. In 1843 he was appointed Poet Laureate, a post he held until his death in 1850.
