José de San Martín

José de San Martín (1778–1850) was an Argentine general and a principal leader of the southern campaigns of the Spanish American wars of independence. After helping secure Argentine independence, he led an army across the Andes to aid the liberation of Chile and then advanced into Peru, where he declared its independence and served as Protector of Peru from 1821 to 1822. Following a meeting with Simón Bolívar at Guayaquil in 1822, he withdrew from the leadership of the independence movement. He spent his final years in Europe and died in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, in 1850.
