Frederick II, of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, was Holy Roman Emperor and king of Sicily, reigning as emperor from 1220 to 1250. A learned and unconventional ruler nicknamed 'stupor mundi' (wonder of the world), he made his Sicilian court a center of scholarship, law, and cultural exchange. During the Sixth Crusade he regained Jerusalem in 1229 through negotiation rather than battle. His repeated conflicts with the papacy, which excommunicated him several times, dominated his reign.
