Qutb ud-Din Aibak
?–1210 CE · Delhi
Qutb ud-Din Aibak was a Turkic former slave-general of Muhammad of Ghor who, after his master's death, became the first sultan of Delhi and founder of the Mamluk (or Slave) dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate. He had earlier commanded Ghurid forces in northern India and captured Delhi and other key cities. He is traditionally associated with beginning the construction of the Qutb Minar in Delhi. He died in 1210 from a fall while playing chaugan (a form of polo) at Lahore.
