Pope Gregory IX
?–1241 CE · Anagni
A kinsman of Innocent III born near Anagni, Gregory IX was already advanced in age when elected in 1227, yet his vigorous reign lasted fourteen years. He twice excommunicated Emperor Frederick II amid a prolonged struggle over Sicily and papal independence, conducting both diplomacy and open conflict. In 1234 he promulgated the Liber Extra, the great collection of decretals compiled by Raymond of Penyafort, which became central to canon law for centuries. He formalized and entrusted to the Dominicans the papal inquisition against heresy, expanding earlier procedures. A friend of Francis of Assisi, whom he canonized in 1228, he also ordered investigations and burnings of the Talmud, episodes weighing heavily on Jewish history.
