Ögedei Khan

Ögedei Khan (1186–1241) was the second Great Khan of the Mongol Empire and a son of Genghis Khan, ruling from 1229. He built the imperial capital at Karakorum and organized systems of taxation and administration to govern the growing empire. During his reign Mongol armies completed the conquest of the Jin dynasty in northern China and swept into Russia and Eastern Europe. His death in 1241 prompted the commanders in Europe to turn back, halting the westward advance.
