K'ak' Tiliw Chan Yopaat (Cauac Sky)

K'ak' Tiliw Chan Yopaat, 'Cauac Sky,' ruled Quiriguá from 724 to 785, at first as a vassal installed under the neighboring power of Copán. In 738 he turned on his overlord, capturing and putting to death Copán's king 18-Rabbit and winning Quiriguá's independence and control of the Motagua trade route. Enriched by this victory, he raised the site's famous sandstone stelae, the tallest freestanding monuments in the Maya world.
