Harun al-Rashid

Harun al-Rashid (c. 763–809) was the fifth Abbasid caliph, ruling from 786 to 809, in a period often associated with the cultural and economic height of the Abbasid Caliphate. His court at Baghdad became a center of learning, commerce, and patronage, and his reign later furnished the setting for many tales in the Thousand and One Nights. His division of the succession between his sons al-Amin and al-Ma'mun contributed to the civil war that followed his death in 809.
