Charlemagne

Charlemagne became king of the Franks in 768 and expanded his realm across much of western and central Europe through decades of campaigns. On Christmas Day 800, Pope Leo III crowned him Emperor, reviving an imperial title in the West and binding it to the Church. He promoted a revival of learning, script, and church life known as the Carolingian Renaissance and standardized administration across his empire. He died in 814 at Aachen, remembered as a founding figure of European history.
