al-Hakam I

Al-Hakam I (771-822) was the third Umayyad Emir of Cordoba, son of Hisham I, reigning from 796 to 822. His rule was marked by repeated internal unrest, including major revolts in Toledo and in the Cordoban suburb of al-Rabad, which he suppressed forcefully. To secure his authority he built up a standing guard of paid soldiers. He was succeeded by his son Abd al-Rahman II.
