José Martí

José Martí (1853–1895) was a Cuban poet, essayist, journalist, and political organizer who became a central figure in the movement for Cuban independence from Spain. He spent much of his life in exile, where he wrote extensively and worked to organize and fund the independence effort, helping to found the Cuban Revolutionary Party. He returned to Cuba to take part in the renewed war for independence and was killed in the Battle of Dos Ríos in 1895. He is regarded as a national hero of Cuba and an influential figure in Latin American literature.
