Georges Seurat

Georges Seurat was a French painter, the leading figure of Neo-Impressionism. Born in Paris in 1859, he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and studied color theory and optics, developing a technique of applying small, distinct dots of pure color that the eye blends at a distance, later called Pointillism or Divisionism. His major canvases include Bathers at Asnières (1884) and A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884–1886), the latter a defining work of the movement. He also painted the Normandy and Channel coasts during summer campaigns. Seurat died in Paris in 1891 at the age of thirty-one, leaving a small but influential body of work.
