Founder of Spinka Hasidism
1838 CE–1909 CE · Modern · Spinka (Sapânța)
R. Yitzchak Eizik Weiss of Spinka (1838-1909) was the founder of the Spinka Hasidic dynasty. A disciple of R. Yitzchak Eizik of Zhydachov and R. Yitzchak Eizik of Zydachov (Zhidachov), he established his court in Spinka (Sapânța, in northern Romania's Maramureş region) and was renowned in his generation as a tzaddik with a particular gift for chesed (loving-kindness).
His Chakal Yitzchak is a homiletic Torah and holiday commentary in the Hungarian-Hasidic mode. The Spinka dynasty survived the Holocaust through his great-grandson R. Yaakov Yosef Weiss, who rebuilt it in Israel and the United States.
