Béhanzin
1844 CE–1906 CE · Abomey
Béhanzin (c. 1844–1906) was the last independent king of Dahomey, in present-day Benin, reigning from 1890 to 1894. He led armed resistance against French expansion in the Franco-Dahomean Wars, but his forces were defeated by the better-armed French army. He surrendered in January 1894 and was exiled, first to Martinique and later to Algeria, where he died in 1906. His resistance is widely commemorated in Benin's national history.
